Here is the back story about the amazing independent Watchung Booksellers. I've been a fan and patron for the entire thirty years!
Stop in today and see what's happening as they celebrate Independent Bookstore Day.
30 years ago Kathy Linsk created Watchung Booksellers, a tiny, 2-room bookstore cozily set up on the second floor above Bradner's Pharmacy. Margot and Trina Rogers bought the bookstore in 1996, Margot became sole owner in 2000 and two weeks before 9/11/2001 we moved into our new location at 54 Fairfield St. Our story in a nutshell. Or a timeline.
But our real story is all the people who have made this bookstore such a special place. Over the years our amazing booksellers, Carolyn Anbar, Nicole Ban, Emma Nathan and Asia Jannah who kept the fires burning this past year, Kathryn Counsell who guided us into the new world of virtual author book talks and all those booksellers who left their mark and legacy with us - Diane Franciose, Gayle Hendrix (who also envisioned, painted and stenciled the walls and ceiling in the "new" store, Marisela Santiago, Jeanne Such, Rosa Hernandez, Deirdre Birmingham and Ashley Himes. And over the years, all the High School Interns who grew up with us (and saved us during the holiday seasons), and of course, we would not be here without our singularly amazing literary community! Our authors, editors, and publishing wizards who keep producing these incredible objects, books - full of ideas and challenges, entertainment and love!
We are also here because of our dedicated community partners: Succeed2Gether's Montclair Literary Festival, Montclair Public Library's Open Book/Open Mind Conversation series, Montclar Film and the Montclair Art Museum, Women's Club of Glen Ridge, and the Book Club at Glen Ridge Country Club. A big thank you to MFEE and all the teachers and schools who invite authors to share their books with our children.
But really, the heart of Watchung Booksellers is YOU! Our readers are the best in the world!!!! You keep us on our toes, sharing the books you are excited about (and those you pan), whether you come in once a week to check out what's new, or once a year to load up on gifts, YOU have nurtured us for 30 years!
